An Immunohistochemical Localization of Pancreatic Polypeptide, Vasoactive Intestinal Polypeptide, Gastrin and Bombesin Containing Cells of the Human Fetal Pancreas

Abstract
|
|
|
Human fetal pancreases from 7 to 40 weeks of gestation were studied for the immunohistochemical localization of PP cells, D, cells, G cells and P cells of pancreatic endocrine cells. The time appearance and the development with age of these immunoreative cells, and the characteristics of fetal pancreatic islets were summarized as follows.
1. PP cells were found for the first time in the epithelial cells of primitive pancreatic tubules at 9 weeks of gestation. At 13 weeks the parenchymal components, including the primitive pancreatic tubules, the primitive acinar cells, and the pancreatic islets were present. PP cell was the only cell type appearing in this stage of the development. PP cells were localized principally in the exocrine portion with the rapid development of acinar cells in 5 months and a few cells appeared in ´the periphery of pancreatic islets. After 7 months the gradual decrease in number of PP cells was observed.
2. D, cells appeared first in the acini at 18 weeks. In 6 months, the cells were present in acini, in ducts and partly in the periphery of islets, but decreased in number with age_
3. G cells were found first in acini at 18 weeks, and thereafter present also in the duct system. Although several G cells were present in the periphery of islets after 8 months, the cells were rarely found in the exocrine portion of pancreas.
4. P cells were present between acinar cells at 26 weeks and found as solitary cells or in small groups in the duct system and the connective tissue, and between acinar cells in 9 and 10 months.
5. During the intrauterine life, PP cells were found principally in the head of pancreas but there was no regional preference in other cell types. In the mantle islet, the PP cells were found in the periphery and D, cells were present in both the central and the peripheral zones.
